Cherson

We continued to cruise the Dnieper River today, arriving at Cherson in early afternoon.  Cherson was originally founded by Catherine the Great to build a Russian fleet for the Black Sea.  The city was used to build ships and harbor the main fleet until the Bolsheviks took over.  After this they shifted ship building north to the Baltics and turned the city into a shipping port.  We toured the city, visiting some of the monuments then returned to the ship for an overnight journey out of the river and into the Black Sea!

Although the city had been a major ship builder, the communists shifted all of this work to the ports on the baltic.  the city's main business now is shipping, some light industry, and trade.

Sandy and two friends sit in front of the city's statue of the spirit of the city. (I'm not sure why sometimes I can rotate these and sometimes not!)

Sandy bought a linen tablecloht after bargaining the price down 20%.

The city was founded in 1873 by one of Catherine the Great's generals.  It's mission was to produce battleships for a black sea Russian fleet.  Catherine used this throne when she visited the city the next year.

The local beer tasted pretty good after a hot day of touring!!
